Operation Sparrow: The Incredible True Story of the Spies Who Tricked Hitler and Won the War

Jason Bell | Hanover Square Press | 29 September 2026

The extraordinary true WWII story of three American commandos who parachuted behind enemy lines with orders to get captured—and convince the Nazis that D-Day was coming a thousand miles away.

March 16, 1944. Colonel Duke jumped into Hitler's Europe to lead Operation Sparrow, an OSS mission authorized by the president. Duke was forty-eight, twice the age of most paratroopers. He had played pro football for the New York Giants, flown fighter planes, and made his fortune in advertising before World War II made him a spy behind enemy lines.

Within days, the three Sparrows were captured in Hungary. It wasn't a failure. It was the plan. Under brutal Gestapo interrogation, Duke and his men set out to convince the Third Reich that the D-Day invasion would strike the Balkans, far from France.

Survive torture while making a lie sound true—it was either genius or suicidal. Probably both.

If the ruse held, Axis divisions would defend the wrong coast. If it broke, three Americans would be shot as spies—and the Wehrmacht would be poised to win D-Day.

Of the tens of millions who fought in the war, the Sparrows were the only ones whose mission required capture by the Nazis. Drawing on recently declassified OSS files, Jason Bell brings their story to life.

Operation Sparrow reveals:

  • The American heroes who turned their own capture into a weapon
  • The Gestapo interrogation rooms that became a secret Allied battlefield
  • The top-secret deception that kept Hitler's divisions away from Normandy

Meticulously researched and told at the pace of a thriller, Operation Sparrow is narrative history for readers of Operation Mincemeat and Unbroken.

The Agent Who Betrayed Makarios

Giorgos A. Georgiou | Self-Published | 26 September 2026

For the first time, this book uncovers a hidden chapter of modern Cypriot history – a story of clandestine intelligence operations, political intrigue and betrayal at the highest level. From the turbulent years after independence to the Turkish invasion of 1974, President Makarios found himself caught between the Greek junta, Washington and Moscow. Yet the threat lay closer than anyone suspected: his own secretary was secretly passing some of the President's most sensitive information to the CIA. The agent was recruited by Richard Welch, who would later become CIA Chief of Station in Athens, where he was assassinated in 1975 by the terrorist organization 17 November. Drawing on original archival research, declassified documents and first-hand testimony from people who served within the Presidential Palace, this book reconstructs the intelligence networks operating behind the scenes and exposes the penetration of Makarios's inner circle. A story of espionage, betrayal and power whose consequences still resonate in Cyprus today.

Secret War Against Japan: The Allied Intelligence Bureau in World War II

Allison Ind | Orchard Innovations | 5 May 2023

The Secret War Against Japan, by Colonel Allison W. Ind of the United States Army, is the dramatic accounting of the principal activities of the AIB - the Allied Intelligence Bureau - a group of British, Australian, Dutch, and American clandestine services formed in June 1942 during World War II. The AIB performed roughly the same functions as the Office of Strategic Services (OSS, predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency). The AIB was under the command of Australian Colonel C.G. Roberts who reported directly to Major-General Charles A. Willoughby, General Douglas MacArthur's Chief Intelligence Officer for the South West Pacific area (SWPA). Author Ind served as Deputy Controller for the organization. Post-war, the AIB was disbanded and Ind served as a senior staff member on MacArthur's post-war occupation force in Japan. This edition features a new Preface by Steve Chadde and is illustrated with maps and photographs.
