Leonard, 95, the son of Sophie Wojciechowski and Leo Budney, grew up in a small town outside of Pittsburgh PA overlooking the Allegheny River. His grandparents were Polish immigrants, and they spoke Polish at home. He was the first in his family to go to college, and he only did so because he won a new car in a local raffle, and used the money from its sale to finance his college education. After attending Duquesne University, he was recruited by the military to go into cryptanalysis while on a ROTC rotation. He worked at Arlington Hall in the early 1950’s, and then joined the newly formed National Security Agency. In 1985, he won the coveted Gold Bug Award for cryptologic work that was of particular importance to the US Government. This was his proudest possession. For his entire career, he was so passionate about his work that he would sometimes go into the office in the middle of the night to work a problem. He loved teaching new cryppies, and prided himself on coaching quite a few talented folks. After retiring in 1987, Leonard spent thirty years in Rehoboth Beach Delaware. He was a former member of the Phoenix Society.
