Barbara A. McNamara, 83, passed peacefully at home on Saturday, January 17, 2026. She is survived by her brother, Paul J. McNamara, nephew Jason McNamara, his wife Michelle Medas, and their three children, close cousin Elaine Devaney, and countless colleagues and dear friends.
Daughter of the late Joseph & Anne (Ford) McNamara, Barbara was born, raised, and educated in Clinton, MA, and was a graduate of the Clinton High School, Class of 1959, and Regis College, Class of 1963. Following studies, Barbara, a Phoenix Society member began her storied career with the National Security Agency in Washington, D.C., where she would serve in numerous capacities, rising through the ranks to the role of Deputy Director, NSA’s highest civilian position. Before retiring in 2003, she was the first woman to assume the assignment of Special United States Liaison Officer to London, UK, from 2000-2003. In the private sector, Ms. McNamara served on numerous committees and as a board member for several corporations including Idemia Public Security North America, and Signalscape, Inc., where she is current Chairwoman of the board.
Ms. McNamara was inducted into the National Security Agency Hall of Honor in 2020 and recognized for her contributions to our nation as a pioneering leader at NSA who helped shape modern U.S. Intelligence operations and strengthen national security.
In retirement, Barbara continued her passion for travel, enjoyed time tending to her garden, visiting with family and friends, and cheering on her New England Patriots.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026 from 9:30 until 11AM with a Funeral Service immediately following in the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton, MA. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Lancaster, MA. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Barbara A.
