Hayden B. Peake, 93, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2026, in Berryville, Virginia. He was born on September 1, 1932, in Los Gatos, California, to Graham and Emily Peake, whose marriage later ended in divorce.
From an early age, Hayden assumed significant responsibilities within the family, helping to support his mother and siblings. These formative experiences instilled in him a strong sense of duty, resilience, and purpose beyond himself. They would shape the course of his life, serving as the foundation for more than seventy years of dedicated service to his country in the fields of military and national security.
Hayden B. Peake graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1968 with a degree in Optical Engineering. Few who knew him through his later work fully appreciated that, at his core, Hayden was an engineer. He carried that disciplined, analytical mindset into every aspect of his life, applying a scientist's precision and method to the study of intelligence literature. The result was not merely a collection of books, but a rigorously organized, deeply informed body of knowledge-one that elevated the serious study of espionage history and proved to be a lasting and valuable contribution to the field.
Following his military retirement, he joined the Central Intelligence Agency as a senior intelligence officer. There, he found his true vocation-not only as a skilled recruiter of candidates for careers in intelligence, but as the Curator of the Historical Intelligence Collection, a position he held with pride and distinction for approximately 28 years. In that role, he became one of the intelligence community's foremost authorities on espionage history, overseeing and significantly expanding one of the world's most important repositories of intelligence literature and research materials.
Even in semi-retirement, he remained deeply engaged with the profession, continuing to write insightful and authoritative book reviews for the CIA's Center for the Study of Intelligence until the end of his life. His work reflected a lifelong dedication to preserving, interpreting, and advancing the study of intelligence history.
A published author and unparalleled collector, Hayden assembled what is widely regarded as the world's largest private collection of intelligence books. His mastery of the field earned him recognition as one of the most esteemed intelligence bibliophiles of his generation. He regularly taught advanced courses at the Defense Intelligence College, where he took particular pride in being known to his students simply as "Professor Peake."
In 2021, Hayden made a significant and lasting contribution to the field by endowing his extensive intelligence library to the Special Collections Research Center of George Mason University Libraries, ensuring that his life's work would continue to inform and inspire future generations.
He was also a founding member of the Foreign Excellent Trenchcoat Society, a little-known circle of bibliophiles and intelligence professionals united by their shared passion for the literature of espionage.
Outside of work, Hayden was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He made the most of unique geographic duty assignments and vacations by exposing his family to, and immersing it in, local U.S and foreign cultures. A photojournalist at heart, Hayden chronicled countless family outings and special moments from behind the lenses of state-of-the-art cameras over the years. He additionally passed on his penchant for service and an insatiable appetite for reading, history, and analytical investigation to 3 generations of direct descendants and countless subordinates, students, and interns over the decades.
Hayden is survived by a large and ever-growing extended family, including his beloved wife of 69 years, Joan; his children, Leslie, Graham, and Kelly, and their spouses; twelve grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and associates who were fortunate to share in his life. All who knew him will remain deeply grateful for the time they spent in his presence and the lasting impression he made on their lives.
